ECoW – Demolition of a disused highrise

Licencing & ECoW of a disused administration building – Cumbria

Project Background:

Plans were announced to demolish an old disused building to make way for a state of the art health care unit.  Bat activity surveys had been carried out in previous years, by an external company, which confirmed the presence of several bat roosts.  S.A.P Ecology & Environmental were contacted to take over the licencing and mitigation side of the project and to facilitate the development.

What we did:

  • Liaised with Natural England (NE), applied for and attained a European Protected Species Licence (EPSL) to enable works to go ahead;
  • Provided a dedicated team of ecologists to act as Ecological Clerk of works;
  • Supervised the removal of all potential roost features, to ensure no bats were in roost and likely to be injured during demolition;
  • Carried out regular breeding bird checks.

The Outcome:

  • An EPSL was successfully attained from Natural England to allow the destruction of known bat roosts.
  • All external cladding and the internal insulation which provided bat roost habitat was removed under supervision;
  • Bat boxes were erected on a nearby building to provide long-term roosting opportunities and compensate for the loss of the known bat roosts;
  • Breeding bird checks continue on a weekly basis.

S.A.P Ecology & Environmental Ltd continue to give ecological consultancy advice on the project as it proceeds.

Testimonial

Sarah and Stephen and their team were very professional (and informative) but also a delight to deal with.
