Great Crested Newts

Great crested newts are protected by EU and UK legislation. Great crested newts have a high level of protection, with their eggs, resting places, breeding sites and the animals themselves all protected. At SAP Ecology and Environmental, our ecologists hold a license to survey great crested newts. It is important to first carry out a Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) assessment of water bodies within or near to the site.

Our consultants are proficient in great crested newt survey methods and can confirm presence and absence by utilising at least three of the following survey methods:

  • Torching
  • Hand netting
  • Egg searching
  • Bottle trapping
  • Refuge search
  • eDNA analysis.

The timing for each survey method varies, and is also impacted by weather and location, but most survey methods must be carried out from March to the end of June. Please contact us for more information about great crested newt surveys and when the best time to carry out these surveys is.
